Treasuring God’s Word in Our Hearts

From Pastor Tedd

Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You. – Psalm 119:11

We cannot treasure Scripture if we don’t know it.

That is why I am challenging each of us to memorize Scripture in 2022. Below are 12 passages of the Bible for each of us to work on this year.

If you already have a memorization plan, go for it. Or, if what I provide below isn’t enough, I’d encourage you to memorize Romans 8, or the book of I John, or Philippians. But if you’ve never done much memory work, committing to memory the following 12 verses is a good place to start.

A word about how to memorize

I’m aware there are apps for your phone and other systems to help you memorize.  I’m old school, and here’s what I do.

Available in the foyer are business cards with the verses, but here’s something else that may be helpful. Get 3×5 index cards and accurately and legibly write out by hand the entire verse on one card with its reference.

Take at least one verse per month and daily do the following: Read it out loud several times, including the reference Then cover up the verse and say it out loud. After you are able to quote it accurately (and yes, memorize it word for word), then take paper and write it out (again, accurately, with the reference). I take a blank sheet of lined paper and, starting at the top of the paper, write out the verse from memory. Then I check it. Then I fold that portion of the paper over, and repeat. Check. Fold, Repeat. I find putting my hand with a pencil into the process and doing so repeatedly helps lodge the truth in my memory banks better than if I just say it quietly to myself.

Review the business cards or your 3×5 cards on a regular basis. Some folks carry them with them; others tape them to their bathroom mirror and review them as they brush their teeth (or tooth).

Others have them posted above their work area or desk. Tattoo them on your dog’s forehead. Add a verse each month, and stick to your system.

One final encouragement: Work with someone else and recite to each other. That is a BIG encouragement and form of accountability; to know a fellow believer is committed to knowing the Scriptures alongside you!

JANUARY
Genesis 1:1 – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

FEBRUARY
Psalm 34:8-9 – O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! 9 O fear the LORD, you His saints; For to those who fear Him there is no want.

MARCH
Psalm 62:5-7 – My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him.6 He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken. 7 On God my salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.

APRIL
Proverbs 3:5-7 – Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and turn away from evil.

MAY
John 5:24 – “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

JUNE
Acts 4:12 – And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.

JULY
Romans 5:6-9 – For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.

AUGUST
Romans 8:32 – He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?

SEPTEMBER
Ephesians 2:8-10 — For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

OCTOBER
Titus 3:5-6 — He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior…

NOVEMBER
I John 1:8-9 — If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

DECEMBER
Jude 24-25 – Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, 25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
